Oumaima was a girl in search of a travel adventure, and she found it last summer at Shanghai Summer School. On top of being able to travel to and experience a completely different country, she learned to converse in basic Mandarin Chinese, and found herself in a traditional Chinese garden in Suzhou, strumming on her ukelele and singing along to Jessie J with her newfound friends from all over the world. This autumn, Oumaima will return to China, this time as an exchange student in Suzhou, and she couldn’t be more excited about it. Oumaima, how did you come across Shanghai [...]

Written by Luka Smajila, Shanghai Summer School 2018 Alumni I truly believe that spending four weeks in summer with Shanghai Summer School is probably one of the best things you can do for yourself this year. Let me tell you why. In life, one thing is for certain, and it is that change is the only constant. So there I was, scrolling through my Facebook feed last March. I stumbled upon an advertisement for a Shanghai Summer School presentation coming up. Being unsure about what I wanted to do with myself and with my life at that time, I thought "why [...]
Let me tell you a story about Shanghai. Shanghai has been pretty good to me. It’s a pretty amazing city, and it’s been an interesting experience. The first thing you notice is the speed and harmony of this gigantic place. Everybody is moving in a different direction, but the flow never comes to a full stop. Yet once you take a step back, everything seems to slow down, and you can really enjoy the atmosphere of the organized chaos. It’s a special feeling observing all the people rushing back and forth, making a living and going about their daily lives. You [...]
In this new series of interviews, we catch up with Shanghai Summer School Global Family members to see what they have been up to since they attended Shanghai Summer School. First up, we have Emiel, an ambitious young student from the Netherlands, whose time at Shanghai Summer School kick-started his love affair with China and Shanghai. Craving for more after the summer school, he returned to China soon after for a language exchange. When we contacted Emiel for a chat, we were pleasantly surprised by news of him landing an internship at a Shanghai-based blockchain startup, and that he had just [...]
Elias is a student coming from Munich, Germany. He’s the last one to share about his Shanghai Summer School experience before application period closes down. Before joining summer school Elias didn’t know what to expect. The experience opened his horizons and helped him to get a job at a Swiss multinational. He’s now doing his best to be able to move back to Shanghai. 1: What made you apply for Shanghai Summer School? I didn’t plan on applying for Shanghai Summer School. I remember googling for something for an exam I had the upcoming week when I came across an ad [...]
Continuing our series of interviews with Shanghai Summer School Global Family members, we took a two-hour ride to Hangzhou, where Andrea from Italy is now doing his semester abroad. So Andrea, how do you like Hangzhou so far? Marco Polo called it “The finest and most splendid city in the world”! I like it, though not as much as I like Shanghai. Hangzhou is also a big city, with about 10 million people I think. It is a very green city with a lot of nature, but it is slightly less exciting compared to Shanghai. I guess it all boils down to [...]
Eva from Austria is the next Global Family member to share about her experience at Shanghai Summer School. When Eva joined Shanghai Summer School, she was only a freshman at the university. Now she’s about to graduate with a master's in tourism management. Eva plans to travel Asia for a year after she’s done and number one on her list is, of course, China. Read on to find out why she plans to return again and again! 1. So Eva, what made you apply for Shanghai Summer School? I guess it was the opportunity to spend a productive and different [...]
Written by Matic Pilko, our friend and 2016 Shanghai Summer School Alumni As they say, change is the only constant. In my humble opinion, the best way to live is to embrace change and make the most of it. And which country knows about change better than China? China has opened its doors to the world and experienced exponential economic growth, grown from rural villages to mega-cities pulsating with energy, made a move from its long reliance of coal as an energy source to transiting to renewable energy. China has undergone a change like never before in the past decade but [...]
The first questions my friends ask when I tell them about how I spent my summer in China as a participant of the Shanghai Summer School and traveling around China are often not about what I saw and did, but “How did you travel around China without speaking a word of Mandarin? Is it even possible?”, followed by a comment along the lines of how extraordinary and brave I was to attempt to do so. Well yes, and thank you for thinking so highly of my folks, but here’s the truth – it’s no big deal, anyone can do it. Okay [...]
