8 Reasons Why You Should Apply for Shanghai Summer School
There are countless reasons why you should spend this summer with us at Shanghai Summer School, but here are 8 of the best ones!
Winter is about to be over, the days are getting longer and warmer, and everything is starting to buzz with life and activity. Already thinking about what to do for the upcoming summer? We might have just the thing for you.
- Experience Shanghai, the city that doesn’t even sit down.
The legendary Chinese metropolis of Shanghai is the most dynamic city on the planet and right now, it is the place to be. Amongst other superlatives it calls claim to, Shanghai with its population of 25 million, is also known as the largest city in the world.
Shanghai (meaning literally “upon-the-sea”) had turbulent beginnings that left a profound mark on the city. Previously a rather marginal city, Shanghai was transformed into one of the world’s most important global trade centres by the arrival of great powers in the 19th century. The large presence of foreigners at that time influenced the openness of the locals to newer trends and set the foundations of the modern city we know Shanghai as today.
In the last 25 years, Shanghai became the financial capital of China’s booming economy and an important global player. Together with its inhabitants (arguably the most significant part of its success story) and its energy, Shanghai is definitely one of the most exciting places to be in the world right now.
2. Learn Mandarin Chinese, the most spoken language in the world.
You might have heard that Mandarin Chinese is the language of the future but you know what? It’s reputation as the most spoken language in the world means that it’s no longer the language of the future, but the language of the PRESENT. If you want to learn the language one in six people in the world speaks, there is no better place to do so than in the land from which it originated.
Learning Chinese in China at Shanghai Summer School is a complete immersion experience. You will spend mornings in level-specific Chinese classes provided by the prestigious Donghua University, and during the afternoon activities and in your daily life in Shanghai, put-to-practice what you’ve learnt in the classroom!
3. Study in an international university and campus.
Donghua University is known as the first Chinese university to ever open its doors to international students. Its academic excellence combined with the international nature of its student campus makes university in Shanghai it ideal for a truly global experience. More than 20,000 students live and study on its Yanan Road campus, located right smack in the centre of Shanghai. It excels in many fields, but is a true leader in space-related textile technology.
4. Discover the exciting nightlife of Shanghai
At Shanghai Summer School, our mantra is to Work Hard but Play Harder. In our humble opinion, Shanghai has one of the best nightlife offers in the world! Nights out often extend into the early mornings, where we find ourselves sitting along the Huang Pu River, waiting for the sun to rise from behind the iconic Shanghai skyline. These are the nights you will remember forever!
And speaking of nightlife in the most literal sense, Shanghai has everything you want, at any time. Feel like a pizza at 4 am? No problem. Want to go for a go-kart ride at 1am? You got it. Fancy a hotpot meal with your friends after a night out partying? Easy, we know where to take you.
5. Be immersed in one of the oldest cultures of the world.
China has the longest continuous history of any country in the world, with thousands and thousands of years of written history. It is recognised as one of the four great ancient civilisations of the world, together with ancient Egypt, Babylon and India. China’s noble tradition, based on great thinkers of the past, carefully guards its millennia of progress.
Too many, in terms of art and philosophy, no culture has ever surpassed that of China during its great creative periods. Its diverse and varying culture has had a profound effect in the philosophy, virtue, etiquette and traditions of Asia to date. The world also has China to thank for paper, gunpowder, the compass, silk, the mechanical clock and…AliExpress! xD
Shanghai, on the other hand, is where the grandeur of traditional China meets the world. A special synergy of the traditional and the modern gives the city an atmosphere like no other. It is no wonder why people from all over the world come to Shanghai.
Shanghai Summer School offers two programs in partnership with Donghua University:
6. Be amazed by some of the tallest buildings ever built by mankind.
In contrast to its rich history, you’d be surprised to see towering skyscrapers making up the iconic skyline of Shanghai. The rapid economic development of Shanghai in the last 25 years is clearly reflected in its architecture, with new buildings constructed every single day.
The locals are most proud of the 632-metre tall Shanghai Tower, currently the second tallest building in the world. Many recognise Shanghai by its iconic Oriental Pearl Tower. Come with us, and we can go skyscraper-spotting by the Bund!
7. Expand your horizons and stand out from the crowd.
Shanghai Summer School might be a school, but the experience and knowledge you are going to acquire during your month with us in Shanghai will be more than what you’ll ever learn confined within the four walls of a classroom or lying by the seaside this summer getting a tan.
Your university education is no doubt important, but it will not make you stand out from the crowd! Living in an international and ever-changing city like Shanghai will allow you to adopt a new world view, and a new perspective that one’s values are relative, and that things aren’t necessarily right or wrong, but simply different from culture to culture.
This, together with your newly acquired knowledge of the Chinese language and culture gives you a solid foundation for further studies or an edge over your competitors for that dream job!
8. Meet new friends from all around the world!
Shanghai is the place where East meets West. You will spend most of your time in Shanghai with what we at Shanghai Summer School call our Global Family – our participants from all over Europe.
Being the most cosmopolitan city in China, Shanghai’s glamour has long been a draw for foreigners from all over the world. For more than 150 years, people from abroad have made Shanghai their home. Then and now, the opportunities that Shanghai offers are what drives people to settle there.
And not forgetting all the local friends you will make! Accustomed to foreigners and open-minded, the locals of Shanghai are always up for a chat over a beer and some Chinese dumplings.
We could go on and on, but we’ll stop at 8 reasons because it’s the luckiest number in Chinese culture as it sounds like 发 (fa), meaning wealth or fortune in the Chinese language. But if you still need more convincing, check out our programmes, or check out what some of our Shanghai Summer School alumni have to say.
